Rare Melocchi’s letter to his student

Dear Mr. Bacanovic,

some time ago I received your post card and a couple of days ago your letter. Many thanks for the good memories you have of me. You ask me for advice and I will pass it on to you right away. Sing for about twenty minutes a day only with the vowel U, forcing yourself after D natural to open the mouth, retracting the lower jaw. Choose no more than three notes, and like this go up one semitone at a time until F, even F sharp. Be aware that the exercise in the upper octave is very tiring so do not be alarmed if it makes you a little hoarse.

This work will open your throat, lower the larynx and raise the soft palate. After doing this exercise for some time, try to slowly put the vowels O and A in the same position, opening well, with the later one, the mouth. And now dear Milivoj, I wish you good work and a great stay in your wonderful country.

Shaking your hand,

Yours A. Melocchi

Pesaro
