Rare Melocchi’s letter to his student

Dear Mr. Bacanovic,

some time ago I received your post card and a couple of days ago your letter. Thank you a lot for the good memories you have of me. You ask me to give you an advice and I’m giving it to you immediately. Sing around twenty minutes per day only with the vowel U, forcing yourself, after D natural, to open the mouth, retracting the lower jaw. Choose no more than three notes, and like this go up one semitone at a time until F, even F sharp. Mind you the exercise in the upper octave is very tiring so don’t get scared if it will give you some hoarseness.

This work will open your throat, lower the larynx and raise the soft palate. After doing this exercise for some time, try to put the vowels O and A in the same position, opening well, with the later one, the mouth. And now dear Milivoj, I wish you good work and a great stay in your wonderful country.

Shaking your hand,

Yours A. Melocchi

Pesaro
